Will Support Businesses Of All Sizes, Promote Efforts To Increase Fair And Equal Access To Digital Advertising

WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 8, 2023) — Americans for Digital Opportunity today announced that lead advocate and tax expert Deb Peters has been named to the Streamlined Sales Tax Business Advisory Council (BAC) Board.

Deb Peters is a former member of the South Dakota Legislature, who served in both the House of Representatives from 2005-2011 and the State Senate from 2011 to 2019. She is widely-regarded as a leader in state tax policy for the last decade and has advocated on behalf of Americans for Digital Opportunity since its inception in February 2023. In the last year she has represented Americans for Digital Opportunity at leading state tax conferences and has testified in front of state legislatures against legislation seeking to establish digital advertising taxes.

Established in 2005, the BAC is the leading voice for businesses, practitioners, and associations that are engaged in and support the efforts of the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board to simplify the collection and remittance of sales and use taxes. The BAC advocates for improvements to sales tax administration by providing input to state tax administrators and legislators.

“In this new role, we are confident that Deb Peters will promote the interests of businesses of all sizes and stand up to those who wish to stifle innovation and growth,” said Doug Mayer, President, Americans for Digital Opportunity. “Taxing digital advertising is a bad idea and there is nobody better to represent this cause on the Business Advisory Council than Ms. Peters.”

“Our small businesses are the backbone of America’s economy and we have a responsibility to make sure that lawmakers across the country understand the negative consequences of a digital advertising tax,” said Deb Peters. “I am honored to be selected to the Board of the Business Advisory Council where I will continue to advocate for the mission of Americans for Digital Opportunity.

The BAC is a formally recognized body under Section 811 of the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement (SSUTA) to represent the private sector in advising the SSUTA Governing Board.
